"Drop" has a long "o" as in hope. The "as" sounds like "uz."
It's a true testament to the power of inspiration. The inspiration behind the Dropas trilogy is fourfold. First, one of my favorite albums as a teenager was (and still is) Pink Floyd's, The Wall. I often contemplated breaking through the wall (through barriers that humans erect around themselves) and how much better the world would be if we all accepted one another for our differences. Second, my grandparent's global adventures and my sixth grade Ancient Civilizations class sparked my wanderlust for world travel and visiting the ruins of Greek, Roman, and Egyptian cities. Third, working side by side with my brother, a mural artist, when we went into business together in the 90s. Utilizing his tromp l'oeil style he transformed block walls into artwork that incorporated mascots of schools where he primarily painted. I used to sit across from the murals and imagine stepping through the "broken walls" to discover what surreal world existed within the cinder blocks or picture the mascots entering our world. Finally, together we created (his artwork and my development of their personalities) the Dropas themselves from stick figures we saw on some sculptures. Those four elements set the wheels in motion and ideas constantly filled my mind until one autumn day in 1993 I started writing.
I simply step away from the computer. The brain is a phenomenal (and sometimes stubborn) organ that continues processing things behind the scenes. I clear my brain palette by removing myself from the project for hours, days, weeks, or even months. When I return, I usually pick up where I left off and with a fresher perspective.
Not at all. Language Arts was my least favorite subject; I loved math and science. Again, don't underestimate the power of that invisible force that lies within us all, that of inspiration. I never thought about writing a book, let alone four, until I was 30 years old.
